ABOUT THE PEACE CORPS
The Peace Corps provides an unparalleled opportunity to learn about other people, develop language and career skills, and help improve the quality of life for people in developing countries. The goals of the Peace Corps are to promote peace and stability through education and training; foster understanding of other peoples among Americans; and enhance other peoples' understanding of Americans.
About 7,000 volunteers currently serve in more than 70 countries around the world, and to date over 240,000 Americans have volunteered since its establishment in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Peace Corps is a government-funded non-profit organization with a headquarters in each respective partner country. Peace Corps must be invited into the country for this relationship to begin.

Raising Awareness of Opportunities for Peace Corps Service Among the С»ÆѼÊÓƵ Community and Beyond

David Atteberry’s Peace Corps service began in 1978 as a Volunteer in the Central African Republic, where he worked as an Inland Fisheries extension agent. Partnering with smallholder farmers, he introduced techniques for raising tilapia in backyard ponds, providing training on every stage from pond construction to harvest. The program strengthened food security, generated new income opportunities, and improved community health through sustainable, locally driven approaches.
Little did he know at the time, that early experience launched a distinguished 40-year career in international development. David went on to serve with grassroots NGOs, the United Nations Development Programme, and ultimately as a Senior Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Over the course of his career, he lived and worked in 14 countries across Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Balkans, culminating in his role as USAID Mission Director in Macedonia before retiring in 2019.
